Many marketers mainly use Claude to draft copy fast. The bigger win now sits somewhere else: with MCP, you connect Claude to the tools your marketing actually runs on, such as your ad account, your Google Drive or your CRM. This guide covers which Claude models are current, what MCP is, what you can do with it and where you should hold back.

Short answer: Use Claude Sonnet 5.5 for everyday marketing work and Claude Opus 5.5 for heavier thinking, such as analysing your campaign results. MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets you connect Claude to your own tools through connectors, so it works with your real numbers and files instead of whatever you paste into the chat. Start with one read-only connection and never share customer data casually.

Which Claude model should you use for marketing in 2026?

Plenty of guides on Claude for marketing still recommend Claude 3.5 Sonnet. That advice is out of date: Anthropic retired the model on October 28, 2025 (model deprecations). These are the current models according to Anthropic's models overview, as of September 29, 2026:

Model Released Strongest at Use it for
Claude Sonnet 5.5 Sep 28, 2026 Best balance of speed and intelligence, well-scoped everyday tasks, polished documents Ad copy, content planning, summaries
Claude Opus 5.5 Sep 22, 2026 Complex work that needs careful judgment, long tasks Campaign analysis, strategy, reports
Claude Fable 5.1 Sep 1, 2026 Demanding reasoning and multistep research Deep market research when Opus falls short
Claude Haiku 4.5 Oct 15, 2025 The fastest model Quick, simple jobs

Anthropic puts it plainly in the Sonnet 5.5 announcement: Opus 5.5 is built for complex work requiring careful judgment, while Sonnet 5.5 is strongest at well-scoped everyday tasks. According to Anthropic, both also write more clearly than the previous generation. Opus 5.5 arrived on September 22 (Opus 5.5 announcement).

Which models you can pick depends on your plan. The free plan gives you Sonnet and Haiku, Opus comes with Pro, and on Pro you can only use Fable with extra paid usage credits (Claude pricing, Fable by plan).

What is MCP? A plain-English explanation

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic introduced it on November 25, 2024 as an open standard for securely connecting AI assistants to your data and tools. The official MCP site compares it to a USB-C port: one standard plug that lets an AI app talk to all kinds of systems. Since December 2025, MCP has been part of the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, so it is no longer Anthropic's standard alone.

For a marketer, that means Claude no longer has to guess. With a connection in place, it can pull your actual campaign numbers, read a document from your Drive or prepare a draft in another tool. For the bigger picture, read the future of marketing AI.

Connectors, custom connectors, skills and plugins

Four terms in Claude tend to get mixed up:

Term What it is Example
Connector A ready-made connection from Anthropic's directory Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, Canva, HubSpot
Custom connector A connection you add yourself using an MCP server address A tool that is not in the directory
Skill Instructions that teach Claude how to do a task Your standard structure for a campaign brief
Plugin A bundle of skills and connectors for a role Anthropic's Marketing plugin

Anthropic explains the difference like this: MCP connects Claude to external services and data, skills give Claude the procedure. Connectors work on every plan, and free users can add one custom connector (custom connectors help article). Plugins are available on paid plans (plugins in Claude).

Four ways to use Claude with MCP in your marketing

1. Ad copy that fits your brand

Without a connection, you paste your audience and tone of voice into every new chat. Connect Claude to wherever your brand information lives and it reads that itself. Try: "Read our brand guidelines in Drive and write ten hooks for a Meta ad, each from a different angle." Want to turn those hooks into a video? Follow our guide on how to make AI video ads.

2. Campaign performance analysis

Since April 29, 2026, Meta has offered official Meta Ads AI Connectors in open beta, including an MCP server that lets an AI assistant pull reports and manage campaigns. Ask Claude to go through the last 30 days and tell you which ads to pause, and why. Use Opus 5.5 for this. Keep the connection read-only at first and change budgets yourself.

3. Content planning

Connect your calendar or project tool and ask for a month of content, lined up with your launches and promotions. Anthropic's Marketing plugin has ready-made commands for this, such as a campaign plan with a content calendar and a brand voice review of your copy.

4. Competitor research

With web search, which works on every plan (web search in Claude), Claude can compare competitor websites and offers side by side. Always ask for sources and check the key claims yourself. AI summarises fast, but it sometimes misreads.

How to start safely with Claude and MCP

  1. Pick one goal. For example: a summary of your ad results every Monday.
  2. Only connect what you trust. Anthropic's own advice is to connect only to servers built and hosted by organisations you trust (source).
  3. Read the permissions when you sign in. You see what access a connection asks for. If in doubt, decline.
  4. Only switch connectors on in the chats that need them. You do that through the plus button in the chat window (connectors help article).
  5. Approve every action that changes something. Let Claude propose, and make the call yourself.

Watch out for prompt injection too. Anthropic warns that a malicious MCP server can include hidden instructions that make Claude do things you did not intend. One more reason to stick to connections you know.

What not to do: privacy and GDPR

  • Don't paste customer files into the chat. The Dutch Data Protection Authority reported data breaches in August 2024 caused by employees entering customers' personal data into AI chatbots. Work with anonymised or aggregated numbers.
  • Don't rely on default settings. On Claude Free, Pro and Max you choose whether your chats may be used to improve Claude (Anthropic privacy article). Team, Enterprise and the API fall under commercial terms (Anthropic's explanation). Check your setting before you share business information.
  • Don't give a connection free rein. No AI assistant should control your ad budget unsupervised.
  • Don't skip the ground rules. If you work in a team, agree in writing which data may and may not go into Claude. The Dutch regulator recommends exactly that.

Genly in Claude through MCP

Genly has its own MCP server that lets you operate Genly from inside Claude. To be upfront: the connection is currently in a closed beta and not yet open to everyone. If you want in, email support@trygenly.io.

The idea is simple: Claude does the thinking, Genly makes the ads. Through the connection, your assistant can:

  • read your Brand DNA: brand, products, audience and tone of voice;
  • have ads made in your brand style (this uses credits from your Genly plan);
  • see which formats are ready and check the status of a generation;
  • check your credit balance.

In Claude, you add Genly as a custom connector. A Genly screen opens, you click Allow and you are connected, with no key to paste. Then ask something like: "Read my Brand DNA and write five hooks that fit my brand." Spending ad budget and publishing ads always happens in Genly itself, by you. Prefer to work in one place? The AI marketing team does the same work inside Genly. Read more about the platform in what is Genly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude 3.5 Sonnet still the best choice?

No. Claude 3.5 Sonnet was retired on October 28, 2025 and can no longer be used. Its successor for everyday work is Claude Sonnet 5.5, released on September 28, 2026. If a tool or article still mentions 3.5 Sonnet, that information is out of date.

Claude Sonnet or Opus: which is better for marketing?

For most tasks, such as copy, ideas and planning, Sonnet 5.5 is fast and good enough. Choose Opus 5.5 when a task needs careful judgment, such as analysing a month of campaign data or building a marketing strategy.

What is the difference between an MCP server and a connector?

An MCP server is the technology on the tool's side. A connector is how you add that server to Claude. Connectors from Anthropic's directory are ready to go; a custom connector is one you add yourself with the server's address.

Can I use Claude with MCP for free?

Partly. Connectors work on the free plan, with a limit of one custom connector. For Opus, more custom connectors and plugins, you need a paid plan.

Can I share customer data with Claude?

Only if your organisation has agreements in place that comply with GDPR. Without them, stick to anonymised or aggregated data.
